Eco-Academy
ECO-Academy (MSC–09ECO/10ECO, MSTX-0AECO, MFOOD10ECO)
This is an exciting cohort-based academy that explores scientific and food systems issues alongside skills associated with ecology, community, and experiential place-based learning! It is open to all Grade 9 and 10 students. Students will actively participate in an immersive interdisciplinary program, focused on the central themes of Eco-literacy, Community, Experiential Learning, and Global and Local Food Systems. Learning will be rooted in curricular outcomes, with high standards for extending inquiry, collaboration, and self-direction. Learning programs will be aligned with the seasons and local Indigenous 13 Moons calendar. In addition to face-to-face instruction, students will also complete and receive additional credit for two yearlong JDF DL courses. Students will earn credit for the following courses: Science 9 or 10 (MSC—09ECO or MSC—10ECO, respectively); Foods STX 10 (MSTX-0AECO). Academy Fee: ($515 est.), including administrative fee.
Hockey Academy
JUNIOR Physical & Health Education 09: Hockey (MPHE-09HOC,YHRA-0BHOC)
This is an exciting program which is aimed at enhancing a students’ educational experience by providing an opportunity at school to enjoy a sport they love. With the recent in-school academy initiative of Hockey Canada, we are proud to partner with their development programs and offer the EMCS Hockey Academy in Semester 1, September to end of January. The academy schedule consists of three on-ice sessions per week. Each on ice session includes specific technical and tactical skill instruction in a small group setting as well as small area games. Specific on ice units focus on power skating, puck control, passing, shooting, offensive tactics and developing defensemen. The remaining academy schedule consists of strength training classes, classroom sessions with focus on hockey theory, sports psychology, health living, nutrition etc. Field trips to area training centers are included. The aim of the Academy is to enhance personal skill development through added ice time with quality mentorship and instruction in a safe, fun and enjoyable learning environment. Small group instruction as well as individual attention and ideal ice times help in furthering the development and leadership potential of each participant. With the focus kept on the individual player’s skills, all ages and abilities at the Bantam and Midget level are able to participate together while enjoying the Academy. Both boys and girls have found the program personally challenging, rewarding and fun. If you are a committed student who aspires to the next level, or one who plays for the enjoyment of the game the academy can work for you. PE 11 Hockey is a class that aims to develop leadership qualities of Senior level students and at the same allow students the opportunity to advance their own individual ability. Students in these classes will participate as student helpers with the Journey Hockey Academy and will also be provided with Leadership training to assist them while working with younger athletes. It is expected that students will be seen and act as excellent role models and abide by the EMCS Hockey Academy Code of Conduct. These students will be looked on to assume class leadership responsibilities as well. Students in the senior academy will also be given a variety of choice on some field trip activities that provides a greater course diversity from the junior level course. The aim of the Academy is to enhance personal skill development through added ice time with quality mentorship and instruction in a safe, fun and enjoyable learning environment. Small group instruction as well as individual attention and ideal ice times help in furthering the development and leadership potential of each participant. With the focus kept on the individual player’s skills, all ages and abilities at the Bantam and Midget level can participate together while enjoying the Academy. EMCS Soccer Academy is proud to partner up with JPSport Soccer Clinic, with highly rated coaches Masato Tkao and Takayuki Arai. Masato and Taka have extensive experience coaching high level youth soccer in Japan. Both are highly certified and have achieved many successes with their perspective youth teams.

Junior Soccer Athlete Training 9 (YHRA-0BSOC)
This is a companion course to Physical and Health Education 9 Soccer.
The focus of the Soccer Academy is to develop and enhance individual soccer skills, as well as to provide mental and physical training both on and off the field. This course emphasizes on-field training where students will excel at various soccer skills including ball control, passing, shooting, crossing, positional play, defensive and offensive principles, game analysis, systems of play and the fundamental rules of the game (FIFA rules). Students will increase their athletic ability with various fitness training techniques which will improve agility, speed, endurance and mental discipline. Students will learn the basic components of fitness training, nutrition, injury prevention, physiology, anatomy, leadership skills, soccer strategies, time management, goal setting, and coaching philosophies. The Soccer Academy will count towards graduation credits. There will be instruction from credited coaches and semi-professional players. Training sessions will take place on EMCS school fields, Sooke soccer turf field, North Langford Recreation Centre, and Seaparc for dry training during the spring. The EMCS Soccer Academy is proud to be in partnership with the Pacific FC, the newly established Canadian professional football league. The Pacific FC now trains out of Westhills in Langford and will be part of the EMCS Soccer Academy training.
