The focus of the Soccer Academy is to develop and enhance individual soccer skills, as well as to provide mental and physical training both on and off the field. Students will meet the outcomes of Physical Education – Soccer 10/11/12 and Sports Psychology 11. Students will spend 2 blocks in their second semester in the soccer academy, and will be enrolled in regular academic courses for the other blocks. Students will learn the basic components of fitness training, nutrition, injury prevention, physiology, anatomy, leadership skills, soccer strategies, time management, goal setting, sport psychology and coaching philosophies. Students will also take a Physical Education Soccer course that will emphasize on-field training where students will excel at various soccer skills including ball control, passing, shooting, crossing, positional play, defensive and offensive principles, game analysis, systems of play and the fundamental rules of the game (FIFA rules). Students will increase their athletic ability with various fitness training techniques which will improve agility, speed, endurance and mental discipline. The Soccer Academy will count towards graduation credits. There will be instruction from credited coaches and semi-professional players such as the Victoria Highlanders Soccer Club. Training sessions will take place on EMCS school fields, Sooke soccer turf field, Bear Mountain Athletic Club, and Seaparc for dry training in the spring. The EMCS Soccer Academy has partnered up with the Highlanders Victoria Soccer Club. Guest coaches, fitness trainers and goalie clinics TBA.
COURSE NOTE: The cost of program, which covers special coaching clinics, videos, keeper jersey, travel costs and other miscellaneous items, is $600 plus $85 registration fee. The fees could be 10% higher depending on registration in each Academy program. A screening criteria is used to ensure suitability of students to the program. Students cannot carry an ‘N’ as an effort mark in any of their classes if they want to be enrolled in the Soccer Academy or remain in the academy.
