Home / About / Provincial Assessments

In total, students will complete three provincial assessments:

  • Numeracy Assessment (NME 10) – Grade 10
  • Literacy Assessment (LTE 10) – Grade 10
  • Literacy Assessment (LTE 12) – Grade 12

For French Immersion students there is an addition assessment:

  • Literacy Assessment- French as a Second Language- Immersion (LTF 12) – Grade 12

Students have up to three opportunities to write the assessments: an initial attempt (required) and up to two rewrites (optional). The best outcome for each assessment will be reported on the final transcript.
Given that the graduation assessments are being phased in, students should refer to the table below for their respective grade to determine which assessments they will be required to write.

Numeracy Assessment 10 Information

Students are required to write the Numeracy Assessment in their grade 10 year, as a graduation requirement. The assessment is based on math concepts learned in multiple subjects from K-10 with an emphasis on K-9.

The Numeracy Assessment 10 is delivered online in three sections:

  1. Common section: Students answer 24 questions centered on four different tasks (situations) completed online
  1. Student-choice section: Students choose two of four available questions and complete two written-response questions on paper. These questions are based on tasks the student will have completed earlier in the common section. Students present detailed solutions to a problem using all the numeracy processes and support their thinking with explanations and assumptions.
  1. Self-reflection section: These questions ask students to reflect on their experience after they have completed the previous sections. The process of reflection is part of their learning.

The NME 10 is graded using a rubric and a proficiency score (out of 4) will appear on the student’s transcript.

More information and sample assessments (both online and print versions) are available on the BC Ministry of Education website: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/assessment/grade-10-numeracy-assessment

Literacy Assessment 10 and 12 Information

The Literacy Assessments are based on learning across various subject areas. The assessments are electronic and consist of selected response and written questions focused on analyzing texts, communicating understanding and marking personal connections.

The Literacy Assessment 10 contains three parts:

  1. Part A: Students read several different types of texts, e.g. blogs, infographics, newspaper or magazine articles, social media feeds, and stories. Students demonstrate that they can analyze and make meaning from the texts by answering a series of selected-response questions. They then provide written responses to communicate their understanding.
  1. Part B: Students choose one of two options. After choosing one option, students read a new set of texts. Students demonstrate that they can analyze and make meaning of the texts by answering selected-response questions. They then provide written responses to communicate personal connections.
  1. Self-reflection: These questions ask students to reflect on their experience with the assessment. This component is not marked.

The Literacy Assessment 10 is graded using a rubric; however, students’ final transcripts will show ‘requirements met’ rather than the proficiency score. Students will receive additional information on their assessment results on the Student Transcripts Service.

The Literacy Assessment 12 contains two parts:

  1. Part A: multiple readings, selected responses, and a required written response
  2. Part B: multiple readings, selected responses, and a student choice of written response form.

The Literacy Assessment 12 is graded using a rubric and a proficiency score (out of 4) will appear on the student’s transcript.
