A Quick Reminder that Friday, April 26th is the National Day of Mourning; we will have a brief flag raising ceremony in front of the school at 8am to honor workers killed on the job.

 Tickets are now on sale for EMCS Musical Theatre, Art and Film production of Mamma Mia!™ in the office, Shoppers Drug Mart and at Journey Middle School for $12.00 each. You can also purchase tickets online at http://sd62.schoolcashonline.com

Production dates are : Wednesday, June 5 (7 pm), Thursday, June 6 (7 pm), Friday, June 7 (7 pm), Saturday, June 8 (2 pm matinee).

Support local youth bands!  Rock the Rink is a youth battle of the bands Saturday, June 1st, from 7pm-10:30pm.  Doors open at 6:30pm, at the Juan de Fuca Rec Centre.

Free Tutoring: Marin, a Grade 11 student at EMCS, is offering free tutoring in any of the following subjects:  Math 9 – 11, Socials 9 & 10, English 9 – 11, Spanish 9 & 10, French 9 – 11, Science 9 & 10, Bio 11, Chem 11, Physics 11. To set up a time, sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board across from Mr. Phipps’ office.

Attention all badminton players. Badminton sign up in the gym.  Practices will start Monday 3:15 – 4:45.

Sports Performance Basketball class is back up and running every Wednesday after school. If you are in this class you need to attend. Any questions or concerns speak to Ms. Robirtis.

Did you know Table Tennis is a recognized Olympic Sport?  Everyone is welcome to join. The Club will meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 6-8pm.

All grade 10 and 11 students are reminded to be completing their careers assignments and adding artifacts and reflections to their digital portfolios.  The deadline for all careers work and portfolios to be handed in is Friday, June 14th. Please see Mrs. Steadman, Ms. Mullin, or Ms. Morello if you have any questions about your careers work.

 

Information for Grads

Sign-Up for the Grad Walk is now available in the office! On June 4th, Grads will spend the afternoon busing to the local elementary schools and Journey Middle School to walk the halls in their caps and gowns. Students and teachers line the halls to celebrate with this year’s Grads. This has been a very special tradition in Sooke over the past few years, and we hope to continue the celebrations for years to come! Sign up is in the office, space is limited.

 Starting at UVIC in September?

Two important dates to add to your calendar:

  1. Destination UVIC, May 25 at UVIC.  All students starting at UVIC in September should attend.  See the UVIC website for details.
  2. Registration 101, May 28 during D block in room 2038 at EMCS.  Staff from UVIC will be here to show students how to select their university courses and build their schedules.

 Scholarship and Bursary Information – Grade 12 students interested in receiving ongoing scholarship updates should join the Scholarships group on the Wolverine app.

The EMCS Awards (scholarships & bursaries) Database has been updated. Visit the Scholarship & Bursaries section of the EMCS website under the “students” tab, “graduation” sub-tab. For ongoing scholarship updates from Mr. Phipps and others, join the Scholarships group on the Wolverine app.  There will be frequent scholarship updates from now until the end of the school year.

 

Information from the Career Centre

Here are several opportunities for kids to get their hours in and support a worthy cause. Bottle drives, SEAPARC Garage Sale and Awareness events at Canada Day, Sooke Car Show and the Sooke Music Festival. Details posted in the Career Centre.

Students interested in Journalism and Social Media have the opportunity to learn with the Sooke News Mirror.  This volunteer position will offer the chance to create and publish articles and cover events of interest to Sooke youth.  Other duties will include designing and updating the on line presence of the paper through social media. Contact the Career Centre for more information!

 Culinary arts students are asked to volunteer at the Legion on April 27th and 28th to assist with food prep, serving and clean up for two large celebrations of life being held that weekend. Sign up in the Cafeteria.

EMCS WEEKLY MESSAGE FOR April 18th, 2019 

Thank you to everyone for a successful Parent Teacher Conference last week. If you were unable to meet with your student’s teacher, please email them directly to check on their progress.  After a long weekend, classes will resume first thing Tuesday morning and with only 10 weeks of classes left, it is important for students to set their sights on the horizon to finish the year strong. A reminder to Grade 12’s to check their deadlines to be eligible for the grad list.

Recognition & Congratulations

The EMCS Boys Rugby Team split their games Tuesday, winning convincingly over the Reynolds Roadrunners 35-10, Simon H with 3 tries and 5 converts, other tries by Adam B and Riley S.  The boys lost a tight game against a competitive Vic High teams, 7-0 on a last play of game try. Next week, the boys are off to Reynolds!

The EMCS badminton team had another big win on Tuesday defeating PCS 6-5.  Grade 11 student Chris P continued his undefeated singles streak and also earned a big win in mixed doubles with Laura V. Emily R also played well for EMCS.   Kobe K and Gaetz B along with Nick H and Connor D clinched the win by winning all of their doubles matches.  Well done to the EMCS Badminton team!

Sooke Arts Council Scholarship and “Sooke Talks” Event

The Sooke Arts Council is raising money for a scholarship for a graduating student to pursue studies in art or literature.  There will be an art auction at the next “Sooke Talks” event Friday May 3 in the EMCS theatre. We are accepting donations of student art to be auctioned, and selling the book “Art & Word” at the event.  https://www.emcsprograms.ca/sooke-talks

Information for Grade 11 and 12 Students

The Young Engineers and Scientists (YES!) Fellowship (http://www.triumf.ca/academic-programs/awards-fellowships/yes-fellowship) offers six-week summer research experiences  to graduating secondary students in British Columbia entering their first year at a recognized post-secondary institution. The Fellowship includes an award of $3,000. The intent of the YES Fellowship is to motivate graduating students with a passionate interest in science to pursue a research career by offering them the opportunity to experience a real-life research environment. Applications are now being accepted at http://www.triumf.ca/academic-programs/awards-fellowships/yes-fellowshipApplication deadline is Friday April 19, 2019

Important Grad information! Students are now able to complete their Grad Comment Form at https://goo.gl/forms/wZjsmmDhQfzDvcgo1 using their SD62 Learns email. If they do not have a Learns account, they can pick up and submit a paper copy through the office. This form is due April 23rd. This is where students can indicate what they would like said about them as they cross the stage at the Graduation Ceremony, along with other information. Students will not be permitted to participate in the Grad Ceremony if this form is not completed.

Important Information About Giving Post-Secondary Schools Access to Your Transcripts – Students interested in attending the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver Island University, University of Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers University, are now able to authorize post-secondary schools to receive interim and final marks updates throughout the year. If you have applied to one of these universities, please book an appointment to see your Counsellor to ensure you’ve set this up correctly on your STS (Student Transcripts Service) account.  For instructions on how to order your transcripts online please go to: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/support/transcripts-and-certificates
